Mountain Lion

Mountain Lion was created for the project Endangered Animals.

Capitol Hill Art Washington organized The Endangered Animals Project, an expansion of Alphabet Animals from 2022. The Endangered Animals Project added 10 NEW sculptures along the Connecticut Ave NW corridor between Woodley Park and Cleveland Park. The project combines an educational component with aesthetic excellence and celebrates local artists. By adding ten more sculptures, CHAW continued to create more vibrant communities through the arts in Washington, DC. Through the CHAW-Cleveland Park Main Street-Woodley Park Main Street Partnership, this project expansion will provide artistic touchpoints for local businesses and residents, further strengthening the connection of creativity with a flourishing neighborhood. The Alphabet Animals encourages residents, business owners, artists, makers, and passersby to explore the inter-connectivity of community through the entry point of unexpected encounters with high-quality art in public spaces–and this new expansion to Endangered Animals adds an important new focus on protecting the wild and wonderful world around us.

My concept for the two sculptural bus shelters in the heart of downtown Hyatsville, was based on a series of structural elements in painted steel that intersect and allow the support of the curved roof in acrylic. The back of the shelter is protected from wind and rain with a sloped intersected metal sheet. Four supports allow the creation of lower and higher benches in wood for the public to have a seating position and a standing position that can also be used as a high table. This is just a concept, and additional protection in metal and acrylic can be added to the sides by using the same intersecting system.

With my public art, I want to enrich each city by creating a sculpture that relates to its artistic and cultural past in a contemporary way. Public sculptures can connect people throughout the city to build a stronger community that interacts with art during everyday activities. Public artworks are needed to beautify a city and contribute to cultural life. They improve the quality and design of public places by establishing a distinctive identity for their evolving communities. My most important goal is to increase people's awareness and enjoyment of my art by working with them from the initial stages of my projects.
